Power Probe IV

I bought a digital blue led voltmeter on Ebay to display the voltage of my golf cart’s main battery pack. It has a red and black power in, which will be powered by a 12v deep cycle battery that runs my accessories like lights and stereo, and a white wire to measure the 48v battery pack voltage. The wiring diagram shows that you are supposed to connect the black negative wire to the negative of both the power source my 12v accessory battery and the voltage to be measured my golf cart’s 48v battery pack. My question is- isn’t this going to cause some problems with both sets of circuits if they share the same negative? Will is casue 48v to infiltrate my 12v system and fry everything, or will it be okay since the circuit is not complete? What about the seperate charging systems they use?

That’s a broad statement. The wires to and from the alternator, battery cables, and ground connections and also the feed into the fuse box. They all should be checked.

Complete with everything you need to get a hook up system installed into any vehicle this kit is ideal for ease of use and flexability. Our 10A intelligent charger automatically engages when you hook up to keep your leisure battery charged.

Can’t find your answer? Get the answer Jun 7, , The way I would do it is get an extension cable for whatever you want to hook up, and splice those wires rather than the PSU cables. With the Volt meter you will have to be careful you dont create a short circuit, as the only voltage drop your going to see would be from a 12v and a Ground rail, but directly hooking those up is going to cause issues. Dont know how you will get around that, maybe some very tricky use of diodes.

If your motherboard offers voltage checking points MSI typically do this then you could just directly solder the leads to that. Ammeter will be simple enough to do, just make sure its not so high a resistance to cause issues a significant voltage drop. Sarch Lalaith Jun 7, , The volt meter wont get much activity and if it did, that’s a problem but the ammeter should suitably go nuts depending on the load your putting the rig under.

Someone Somewhere Jun 7, , 1: Parallel the two yellow wires together and feed them through the ammeter – should be under 8A 96W unless you go really crazy on the OC. Ammeter goes in series – cut the wires, put the ones from the PSU in one end, and the ones continuing to the CPU in the other.

This guide provides information on alternators, voltage regulators, ignition coils, belts and pulleys, mounting brackets, dash gauges and other accessories and devices. The Delco 10SI alternator is the top choice for a volt alternator conversion.

Apr 05,  · Martin66, I was looking for instructions on how to connect my Hawk Tune-Up and Diagnostic mini-analyzer, because the page for the basic hook up is missing from my instruction book, the basic hookup is black croc clip to battery ground, the red croc clip to .

I also needed to know what a safe level was in order to see the actual draw or lack of. Some guys use a dead man switch attached to the battery post instead of jumper wires. Sometimes these draw tests can take hours to complete, depending on what module you’re looking at and it’s length of time to power down Sleep Mode. I find it not only awkward, but a little confusing to have all these devices on an adjacent work table or balancing precariously on the edge of the fender.

The other thing you need to do the draw test properly is the correct values for each systems parasitic draw. I find it a lot easier to watch the meter values dropping off to their sleep mode when I have a pretty good idea as to which module it is. All of which is time consuming, involves lots of connections that have to be working correctly, as well as a lot of patience on my part. I really would like to have a way to at least isolate the offending circuit fast, efficiently, and accurately without all these hassles.

How about a way I can see the draw without disconnecting anything. No pulling fuses, no need for a dead man switch, and no need of that temperamental amp meter hook-up which we all me included forget to switch back when we check voltage the next time we need the meter. Well, there is… Before parasitic draw testing it was the tried and true old test light method between the battery post and cable. So how about a way to locate these draws in a modern car and not worry so much about the exact values… just find the problem and leave all that technical mumbo-jumbo aside.

Car Battery or Alternator: How to Tell Where the Problem Lies January 27, Almost all of us have experienced the problem where either your car battery or alternator just conks out, and you can’t make out which one to replace. Its not easy finding out exactly which part of your car is giving you the trouble, but here are a few tips by which you can find out whether you have car battery problems or alternator problems. Check Your Battery First Start by checking your battery first. In cold weather, it’s very common to have a dead battery that just won’t start.

Feb 10,  · I’m going to install my PowerMaster, one wire alternator and need to know how to hook it up so that my volt meter continues to work. Thanks, Tim.

An old-style test light that uses an incandescent lamp as an indicator can read: These wires are generally but NOT always marked with yellow loom or tape and likely have yellow connector housings. If you hit the wrong sensor wire and trigger ALL of the airbags, there may be enough damage that the vehicle may be totalled from the cost to replace the bags and the affected trim panels.

Some airbag systems destroy the entire dash, the door panels and even parts of the seats when they deploy. This page shows how to use a test light to test for blown fuses in the aftermarket audio system that you installed or are going to install. If someone asks you to work on a car with airbags, and you don’t know what you’re doing, DON’T do the install. If you’re going to install a system in your vehicle and are going to be probing wires of which you don’t know their precise function, use a multi-meter to find the appropriate wire.

As a final note, disconnecting the battery in the vehicle does not necessarily remove the chance of the SRS deploying. Some systems have backup supplies which are designed to allow the system to work properly even if the battery is destroyed in the accident. A test light is, when properly used, one of the best and quickest pieces of test equipment available for troubleshooting 12 volt power systems.

It is easy to test a sensor to make sure it is working with just a voltmeter and propane torch. Take the sensor you want to use out of the car and hook your voltmeter up to the sensor wire and sensor ground wire using the chart on this page to figure out the wires. Once you have it hooked up you should be reading 0 volts. It takes a few seconds to get it up to temperature and you should see the voltmeter go to.

Wiring an alternator. This diagram shows how to wire a Delco (GM) internally regulated 3-wire alternator. This particular model (10SI, used in the s and early 80s) is the one you’ll find on the generation of GM cars most often used in demolition derbies.

In the automotive context, a voltmeter gauge displays the number of volts stored by the vehicle’s battery. Many vehicles, particularly older cars, are equipped with only a dashboard light that illuminates when the battery voltage falls below a normal level. Sunpro manufactures volt gauges that instead feature a needle that moves across a numbered dial to indicate exactly how much voltage the battery has.

Although Sunpro produces a number of volt meters that look different, the process of hooking up the gauge is the same regardless of the external appearance. This wire will serve as the ground wire. A common mounting location is against the interior-side of the firewall or within the engine compartment. Locate a bolt tightened into a panel.

Remove the bolt with a wrench and insert the shaft of the bolt through the closed-eye wire connector, then tighten the bolt into the panel. The negative terminal features a ” ” symbol below it. Slide the closed-eye connector onto the terminal and tighten a nut over the connector with a wrench. This wire will serve as the positive wire.

How do I troubleshoot trailer wiring problems? However, when something goes wrong, this simple wiring can become very complex and confusing. Here are some thoughts about trailer wiring that might help when the boat is spending too much time in the garage waiting for you to get a couple of light bulbs working. There are two approaches to troubleshooting. The first approach is based on knowing what is wrong.

For example, the right rear turn light stops working.

Testing a car amplifier to see if it works is not necessarily a complicated task, but there are some key things to keep in mind. When hooking up any electrical item to your vehicle’s system, make sure you have the polarities correct to avoid costly damage.

What is a blower resistor? Blower resistors are resistors which are used to control the fan speed of automotive blowers. The fan speed can be changed either by switching the blower resistor resistance mechanically, using a rotating lever, or electronically by the air conditioning system. The change in resistance then limits the current through the motor, which dictates the speed at which the blower fan works.

This article will focus on mechanical blower resistors, their construction and troubleshooting. Construction A blower fan is connected to the negative battery terminal also called ground on one end and to the positive battery terminal through a blower resistor on the other end. The blower resistor is connected in series with the blower fan. This means that the current running through the blower motor, and thus is speed is controlled by the resistor value.

The user chooses a suitable fan speed by using a selector to connect one of the resistors in the blower resistor pack. Blower resistors are made of several resistors with different resistances. There are also two additional circuits used for the off state and the highest fan speed state. In the off state, the blower motor is disconnected from the power supply. The lower the resistance of the selected resistor in a pack, the higher the current that flows through the blower fan, and the faster the fan will turn.

It used to be common to install an amp meter in an MGA back in the day , but unless you are in search of some unusual information you may be better served with a volt meter. A dash mounted volt meter will be used to monitor electrical system voltage as you drive. The car battery tends to dampen system voltage swings, generally well within a range of 8 to 16 volts for a nominal 12 volt system.

So to have the best meter reading you would want a dash mounted volt meter with dial range of 8 to 16 volts give or take a bit , not a 0 to 20 volt meter. The volt meter is a high resistance low current device which can be connected directly across the battery.

Triple segmented daisy chain jumper to this allows you to hook up all three socket elements and make one connection to your power source. About This Item This listing is for a Voltmeter, Amp dual USB charger, 12 volt cigarette lighter socket, Pop out lighter plug .

Home Articles How to Use a Voltmeter How to Use a Voltmeter Easy step by step guide on how to use a voltmeter, this information pertains to all car related applications. Step 1 – To check for voltage 12 volts at a particular accessory switch the meter to the DC voltage setting. Voltmeter Set to DC Voltage Step 2 – Grasp both negative and positive leads and hold them against the desired test point such as a terminal or wire, the meter will instantly give a reading. Voltmeter Test Leads Step 3 – Start the engine and watch the meter rise in voltage as the alternator starts producing voltage.

Switching the voltmeter to AC voltage will test the alternator diodes for leakage which will destroy a battery over time, voltage should be 0 in this test. Switch the meter to mV to test milli volt generation from a sensor, such as a crank angle sensor while the engine is cranking over. Test Fuel Injector Step 6 – A voltmeter works great for testing pulse voltage which is needed for fuel injectors and ignition coils.

Testing Ignition Coil Pulse Step 7 – Gently install a paper clip into the connector to aid in testing when needed.

Is there a way to test the flasher unit before fiddling with other things? And just out of curiosity, how does the flasher unit work? Click for larger picture and yes I know there’s a wire loose. If the terminals are not marked you can check it with a test light or ohm meter. The “P” terminal will be open circuit at rest, and the other two terminals are functionally interchangeable. The canister does not need to be grounded, but it does need to have the correct electrical load to operate properly.

Alternator harness for easy hook up of foreign and domestic alternator test leads. Modular design for easy servicing. Three range color coded pivot and jewel analog meter.

Realizing that wire harnesses are not perfect, the differences between the various points will be the voltage drop in the wires, which you will have in the wire going to the meter as well. There may some advantage to simply connecting to an under-dash fuse block, because that will tell you if certain parts of your wire harness are having an issue. So, unless you are easily alarmed by a few tenths difference in your voltage reading, just connect it to the most convenient point, or to the point you are most concerned with.

You can use the meter to probe various potential connection points to see if it will work before perminently mounting. I suspect what you really need in your volt meter is not the most accurate reading, but a repeatable reading and the ability to notice gross changes that indicate something just stopped working, or that something is loading the system down too hard. In the LC, the fuse block in the cab below the dash on the side wall to the left has switched and unswitched 12V connection points on the back side of it, connect there.

If the volt meter is working properly, it should have infinite impedance, and should not smoke anything or drain your battery.

Connecting a voltmeter[ change change source ] The voltmeter can be connected by joining two wires to where the voltage is. One wire is the positive one, and the other the negative. With some voltmeters, one must make sure that the wires are connected to the right spots: This way, the voltmeter is parallel to the electrical circuit. If there is a high voltage many volts , one can get hurt or even killed by touching the metal connections with the voltage directly.

How voltmeters show the voltage[ change change source ] When the connections are made, the voltmeter shows the voltage.
